I do have an XP installation that is not porting properly. Windows starts up quite often, I have the option to select a user. I cannot view windows normally (and safe mode is the same) to check things for example with a viewerevents.

I realize that I can just reinstall or fix XP, but maybe I really don’t want to do this without knowing what the experts say it can’t (easily) be fixed.

The first step to recovery is leveraging your investment in Windows Safe Mode. To simplify boot logging in Windows XP with Vista, start your computer and press F8 continuously during the boot process until you see the OSD:

How do I start Windows in debug mode?
To enable boot debugging, use someone else’s BCDEdit / bootdebug command and specify the appropriate boot component. If you have chosen the correct kernel debugging, also use BCDEdit / debug processing. You must also choose a debug connection, just like with normal kernel debugging.
You will be taken back to the menu screen, and after that you should see a blue “Enable connection on startup” at the bottom of the screen (don’t worry if you find that this screen also does not display bootable Windows):
What is Enable boot logging Windows XP?
When boot logging is enabled, Windows starts normally until the device or driver causing the problem crashes the specific system or completes the boot process, but unfortunately often generates an error message in log events. During the startup process, Windows creates a log file that lists virtually all of the processed steps taken in additionTo the completed.
If the crisis is not causing Windows to crash, and after the startup process is complete, your site will be able to view the ntbootlog.txt file. Look for signs of device driver tracking issues. If you have any difficulties, pleaseGo to Device Manager and turn off your device, or if this happens, uninstall the program and restart it. If the underlying problem does not occur, remember that it was this device and you should check their website for new drivers or known issues.
If your unique problem causes Windows to restart your computer, enter Safe Mode by selecting Safe Mode on the Advanced Menu screen. When you examine the ntbootlog.txt file, look for events that were taken directly but the download did not complete. By comparison, the problem is likely to persist until the end of the application (because the last item was soaked before the crash). If you find a specific problem, uninstall the app, go to Device Manager if necessary and just turn off your device. Restart your computer and see if the problem persists. If it starts without a battery, check the vendor’s website for new drivers or known issues.
If you are still having problems, re-enable boot logging, hto see if any new features are registered after installing the remote device or application. If you don’t see the problem, you may need to contact your local computer store to fix the real problem.
- Boot logging can only be enabled in safe mode. Once activated, the data will only be displayed during the current download process. It will probably not register next time, but will only re-enable it in safe mode on reboot.
- If the computer file ntbootlog.txt is present, you can add the existing log file the next time you enable Windows boot log.
- It’s a great idea to let Windows configure a new protocol if you’re happy with that, or after you’ve actually added new devices. This disables full logging and allows you to compare against a record if any problems arise.
